~ Kris Shoult will be reading some of her poetry that will be included in a book that VSA Texas is putting together.
~ We also have a song by a veteran in direct response to one of Kris’ poems.
~ We also hear a Poem by Artist, Poet, Soldier
Though it seems few people know of him or his poetry, I hope it helps convey some of the courage, complexity, sensitivity and genius of this man. Here is a link to the Archive of the original broadcast with more Poetry by Alan Seeger .
`Also Book Smith produced an annual Decoration day / Memorial day special. Last year it featured the 23rd Headquarters Special troops (Ghost Army of WWII plus a special 100 year memoriam of Alan Seeger WWI Decoration day reading of his 'Ode to the American Volunteers Fallen for France'
Though it can be difficult to square the Artist with the Soldier, we humans are more than one dimensional and have many facets and nuances that make us beautiful. Alan Seeger through his story and Poetry has helped me reconcile the two and appreciate more the challenges all the more.
Part of our goal is to reconcile the Services and the Arts.
Veterans can often be portrayed in certain ways in the media which often overlooks the nuances. We hope to portray a more well~rounded perspective.
The Arts offer a great way to encourage growth, self expression and communicate and connect with civilian life while bridging any perceived differences and laying the groundwork for reconciliation and understanding.
There is always much more to the story than meets the eye. We are thankful for our guests for helping us all have a better understanding and sensitivity.
